摘　要
　　自民國八十二年底，台灣地區老年人口已達到聯合國世界衛生組織所訂定的高齡化社會之標準，且由於社會變遷也造成家庭結構的轉型，使得老年人居住型態亦隨之改變。本研究是針對獨居老人為研究對象，主要為探討老人對獨居生活之適應狀況，故本研究目的為：透過了解長者在獨居生活中成功適應及不良適應所顯現的不同特質，期待能讓實務工作者了解獨居長者成功生活的一面，使服務方案得以多元化，並且由研究發現與國外文獻所稱的「成功老化」、「生產力老化」理論相呼應。
　　在研究設計上，本研究採用質量混合的研究方法，共分為兩個階段，抽樣方式皆為立意抽樣，第一階段是採問卷調查法，共面訪了23位受訪者，並使用統計軟體SPSS 14作問卷資料的分析；第二階段則採半結構式訪談法，共訪談了8位獨居長者，並運用質性研究資料分析電腦軟體之一的－QSR NVivo 7.0，以做為訪談稿的分析工具。
　　混合式研究法的資料分析策略多元，本研究是採以質為主、以量為輔的方式詮釋研究發現。經由兩階段的資料分析，本研究結果發現：老人「獨居」並非就是弱勢的處境，亦非就是需要靠他人幫助，反而他們擁有豐富的內在資源，能夠靠自身能力適應生活，故應避免將這群所謂「獨居老人」的議題概化之。由訪談資料分析共得出四個主題，分別為正向適應特徵、對獨居生活感到煩惱的事件、自己居住的原因、以及對政府的期望。進一步與量化研究發現整合分析，得出個人層面中的健康狀況、經濟狀況、家庭關係、社會參與、社會支持等等，和環境層面中的政府所提供之服務，對受訪長者對獨居生活的適應程度扮演著重要的角色。特別值得注意的是，長者的身體健康狀況與個人興趣的保持是受訪長者均認為是影響獨居生活品質的重要因素。而對於保有孝道思想下的我國而言，親子關係不佳、子女不孝等，所帶來的負向情緒比原本就沒有子女的長者還要來的不堪。除此之外，社會服務應趨向於除了政府補助，社會工作者亦可協助長者連結其他民間資源，整合多方資源，以避免長者苦等不到政府補助而讓生活陷入困境。
　　根據本研究分析所得之結果，共分為政策面、社工實務面、研究面此三個面向予以提出建議。研究發現的信、效度討論與研究限制亦在結論與建議的章節中陳述。
